It's notorious for causing public scandals and has even been credited as a causal factor in mental health issues. But Facebook also has really useful features that can help you organize your life. You can use it to keep track of friends and family members, communicate with your loved ones, share photos and videos, play games with others online... the list is endless! With the increase in the number of users, Facebook now has over a billion active users. Knowing all these, you're probably wondering how Facebook got to be as big as it is now. In this article, we're going to tell you about this amazing site and its origin story. The Social Network The Social Network tells the true story of the origin and formation of Facebook, a popular social media website used by millions worldwide today. It's a film adaptation based off a book by Ben Mezrich called The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook . It was written after Mezrich befriended then Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg and was given access into his life that he never had before. It explores the professional and personal struggles that Zuckerberg deals with in the creation of Facebook, which leads to his downfall when lawsuits filed by Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra culminate into an agreement for settlement worth $65 million. This is the scene where Zuckerberg discovered that they were set to sue him. The Social Network Locations The Social Network was shot on location in Boston, Massachusetts (specifically at Harvard University), Palo Alto, California (at Stanford University), New York City (at Columbia University), and its setting Sun Valley, Idaho (at the Snow Summit Resort). Filming was done during September to December 2009. The filming of the movie was not interfered by Facebook since they have no ownership on the film rights. The only thing that Facebook asked for was that they don't want Zuckerberg to look bad in any way. The cast and crew were therefore given a unique challenge, where they had to portray young Mark as a believable and sympathetic character. The Social Network Plot The Social Network tells the story of how Facebook came to be from its beginnings at Harvard University. It details the hard work and struggles of Mark Zuckerberg as he strives to make Facebook a success, with his ideas often being stolen from him by rival co-founders Eduardo Saverin (played by Andrew Garfield) and Sean Parker (played by Justin Timberlake). Many events that happened during the formation of Facebook are based on real stories. One of which, involving an intense game of pickup basketball between Zuckerberg and classmate Dustin Moskovitz (played by Rooney Mara), was based on a true story. Dustin actually wrote a blog post about this game, recounting how it felt "like one long game of 'Hole in One.'" The Social Network Characters The Social Network stars Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg, Justin Timberlake as Sean Parker, Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin, and Rooney Mara as Cameron Winklevoss. cfa1e77820
